Most of us are aware of the 80% failure rate of New Year’s resolutions where most people lose their resolve by mid-February. For those who have persevered through the year, you are indeed, a rare breed, so congratulations to you!
I have to admit I was part of the 80% failure rate until about six years ago when I came across a new and more effective approach: choosing Just One Word to cover everything I did during the year. This one word not only helps me achieve my goals but creates a great sense of fulfilment and joy throughout the year.
How do you choose the word for the year?
Before you choose your one word, here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- What do you want to achieve most in 2020?
- What qualities will you need in order to succeed?
- Out of those qualities, which one challenges you/scares you/do you lack at this present time?
- If you developed/displayed this quality would it propel you forward in 2020?
My word for 2019 was COURAGE. I chose this word because I knew I needed to take quite a few risks in 2019. I was planning on trialling out a new lifestyle now because I want my life to look very different in 5 years time. This word has served me so brilliantly and I am grateful I chose it. I am now in the process of choosing my word for 2020.
If you are a person of faith, I would pray and ask God to show you what your word should be. It could be a character trait that you need to develop for eg discipline, focus, patience. If you choose that word apply it to all areas of your life. Be disciplined with your health, relationships, work life and personal life. Whatever you decide to do, be disciplined with it and if you find yourself losing focus, remind yourself about your one word and get back on track.
Display the word as a reminder
Above is a photo of what I did to remind myself about the word I had chosen for the year. I created this sign and had it sitting in my living room the entire year. When I had to make those BIG decisions during the year, this display would remind me to step out and be courageous. Try and find a way in which you feel comfortable producing that reminder for yourself. It will serve you well, especially when you find it challenging to push through and keep pursuing that goal.
If you decide to use Just One Word as your New Year Resolution for 2020, please share what your one word is or if you have a few you are tossing up, share those with us. Feel free to also share why you have chosen that word/s for the year. I would love to hear from you and keep track with how you are going through the year.
